LIVESTOCK HEALTH REQUIREMENTS 2026

From the Navajo Nation Department of Agriculture

Window Rock, AZ

To limit disease introduction into and on the Navajo Nation, the following are the current requirements for all livestock prior to entry and upon travel. The requirements written are subject to change at any time due to animal disease outbreaks that may arise. Please check with your veterinarian for any changes.

Horses

  1. Current Health Certificate within 30 days of shipment. Digital or Electronic copies will be accepted for verification.

  2. Health Certificate statement: “All animals identified on this CVI were inspected and found to be free from clinical signs of Vesicular Stomatitis.”

  3. Current Negative Equine Infectious Anemia (Coggins) test within the last 12 months.

  4. Navajo Nation seasonal hauling permit OR state issued hauling permit from AZ, NM, UT.

Cattle

  1. Current Health Certificate within 30 days of shipment. Digital or Electronic copies will be accepted for verification.

  2. Health Certificate statement: “All animals identified on this CVI were inspected and found to be free from clinical signs of Vesicular Stomatitis.”

  3. Negative Trich test for all breeding bulls (National Requirement).

  4. Must have electronic (RFID, EID) ear tags (National Requirement).

  5. Navajo Nation seasonal hauling permit OR state issued hauling permit from AZ, NM, UT.

Sheep/Goats/Llama

  1. Current Health Certificate within 30 days of shipment. Digital or Electronic copies will be accepted for verification.

  2. Health Certificate statement: “All animals identified on this CVI were inspected and found to be free from clinical signs of Vesicular Stomatitis, blue tongue, or exposed to scrapie.”

  3. Must have electronic (RFID, EID) scrapie ear tags (National Requirement).

  4. Navajo Nation seasonal hauling permit OR state issued hauling permit from AZ, NM, UT.

Swine

  1. Current Health Certificate within 30 days of shipment. Digital or Electronic copies will be accepted for verification.

  2. Health Certificate statement: “All animals identified on this CVI were inspected and found to be free of Vesicular Stomatitis and have not been vaccinated for pseudorabies or fed raw garbage.”

  3. Must have electronic (RFID, EID) ear tags (National Requirement), or tattooed, or ear notched.

  4. Navajo Nation seasonal hauling permit OR state issued hauling permit from AZ, NM, UT.

Navajo Nation Department of Agriculture

The Navajo Department of Agriculture (NNDA) is established under the Division of National Resources within Executive Branch of the Navajo Nation. Today, the Nation Department of Agriculture is the lead agency in planning, coordination, and management of all programs, policies and regulatory provisions designed to protect and preserve Navajo rangelands, livestock and agricultural resources.​​
