Simple overview of the most important rules for pet owners in Kayenta Township

Number of Pets Allowed
Households may have up to 4 animals total.
Temporary foster animals may be allowed if they meet Township fostering requirements.

 

Pets Must Stay on Your Property
Dogs and other pets cannot roam freely (“at large”).
Pets must be securely fenced, inside a home/enclosure, or on a leash and under control.


Leash Rules
Dogs in public areas must be on a leash or similar restraint.
Tying or staking animals in unsafe ways is prohibited.

 

Clean Up After Your Pets

Pet owners must clean up pet waste, keep property sanitary, prevent odors, excessive noise, or unsafe conditions.


Cruelty & Neglect Are Illegal

It is illegal to abuse or intentionally harm animals, abandon animals, leave animals without food or water, keep animals in unsafe or unhealthy conditions.

 

Rabies Vaccines & Licensing

Dogs over 3 months old must have a current rabies vaccination, be licensed with Kayenta Township,
wear their license tag.

 

Dangerous Animals

Animals may be considered dangerous if they attack people or other animals without provocation,
repeatedly threaten public safety.

 

Complaints can lead to investigations, hearings, impoundment, removal of the animal in serious situations.


Animals Can Be Impounded For:

  • roaming loose,

  • nuisance behavior,

  • lack of license,

  • suspected rabies exposure,

  • dangerous behavior,

  • ordinance violations.

 

Livestock Rules

Livestock must stay securely contained, not roam onto roads or neighboring property, not create dangerous conditions.

 

Penalties

Violations of the ordinance may result in fines, citations, impound fees, additional penalties.
